Media Marketing Manager

Start Date: Immediate Compensation $28-$32.

Established in 1984 Chelsea Garden Center operates two (2) Brooklyn, NY garden centers. We specialize in the design, delivery, and installation, of both residential and commercial landscapes. We have a diversified portfolio of work from residential to large scale commercial projects of every description. Our retail garden centers, and online store are central to this role.

POSITION DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES

The below provides a roadmap to the position, it will morph expanding over time as you become a vested member of our team. It is my hope that this offering will eventually grow into you assuming a leadership position in Chelsea Garden Center.

Position overview: It is mutually understood these job roles will be melded together; your time roughly broken down as follows, 65% spent on marketing, website updates & social media, the remaining 35% of your time involved with nursery sales. The starting goal is for you to train in the garden center for a minimum of two to three months learning company means and methods, plant pallet options and our pricing operational structure that will aid in fulfilling you’re your marketing obligations. On the retail sales side, you will start in a supporting role responding to inquiries with a goal of providing a knowledgeable customer service experience. These customer interactions usually involve a series of standard gardening questions that need to be asked of both our walk-in and phone clientele. This formula may be reviewed after three months’ and adjusted accordingly.

Marketing: In conjunction with Chelsea leadership, develop and document a marketing plan and detailed strategy to implement and oversee the successful execution of the plan’s strategy. The plan should focus primarily on Chelsea’s two (2) retail locations, design-build division, and a pathway forward to increasing traffic to Chelsea’s Shopify online store along with driving walk in traffic to each store. As previously discussed, each store has their own shopping trends and stocking requirements. For the plans initial phase, you will be responsible for developing and writing content, scheduling and publishing posts and associated tasks. Chelsea has a marketing intern managing our Instagram, and Tik Tok. Under your guidance and mentorship, assume a leadership role creating content and following a regular posting schedule. In short, the expectation is that you will formulate a structured plan that will be executed under your trained eye.

Marketing Plan Review: To formulate a comprehensive marketing plan approach, conduct a thorough review of our current marketing which includes our website, Google analytics and all social media, with an eye on what can be improved and next steps to making these improvements where indicated. The goal is to formulate a fresh marketing approach and implement a new plan while providing guidance on how to optimize performance across all channels. Our website is built on the Shopify platform. It is expected that under the direction of our webmaster, you will continue to tweak and add content of all types to our website. As part of your media review, collaborate with leadership on regular daily & weekly website updates.

Review Chelsea’s Shopify: Daily & weekly monitoring of Shopify online sales taking special note of house plant sales. Review weekly analytics with management to determine needed marketing improvements. Given your knowledge base, passion, and expertise with houseplants and in collaboration with our foliage buyer, work on improving our online houseplant offerings and sales performance while concurrently working to improve online nursery and planter/dry goods sales. The expectation: over time and with attention to weekly numbers, we can craft improved online results.

As part of your daily responsibilities: Formulate documented guidelines and oversee our media intern delegating various media projects on a daily/weekly basis to ensure our marketing target planning is carried out as it relates to posting on Instagram, our website updates, and photographing of new products.

Daily nursery duties: Include but are not limited to the following tasks. Helping to open & close the store moving rolling flower display carts in and out, setting up front of house displays, working with customers on the sales floor, writing up and tracking your work orders so that if required, delivery and installation sales are communicated to our dispatcher for scheduling. You will be responsible for tagging all sold items and moving the smaller items into designated sold area holding beds. It is expected that you make certain that items needing to be ordered for future delivery meet the agreed time constraints mutually set. Collectively along with our operations manager and nursery buyer, you need to review any pending work orders which require Chelsea to buy-in additional plants. This process will be reviewed as part of your training. You must be able to lift 50lbs as you will be lifting heavy material from time to time during your normal workday. You will also be working under inclement weather conditions from time to time.

Nursery deliveries: Chelsea has developed a reputation for purveying only the highest quality green goods available in our industry, to that end, any undersized “not retail ready” plants should be rejected and returned to the vendor. From time to time, physically receiving and inspecting orders is an important part of your position. Company leadership along with your colleagues will work with you to identify Chelsea quality standards within each plant category. In short, we want you to be part of our team and help us cull any undersized or diseased material from any shipments that you are helping to receive and check in. On busy spring days with multiple deliveries, this responsibility is particularly important and is key in maintaining quality control. You are encouraged to keep an eye out for any substandard items and bring them to management’s attention.

Grooming & Maintenance: All plants need our attentive eye. We have employees who are specifically involved with display and plant watering and maintenance. During your day, keep an eye out for plants not properly cared for, it may be a splash of water or a trim, this falls under the daily routine along with helping to keep the nursery and store merchandised effectively, that shelves are fully stocked with required products and that our in-store displays are easy to access and inviting to shop.

Compensation – This is a full-time position. Your starting salary will be ($34) per hour with a five (5) day work week including one (1) weekend day. Store hours vary from 9-6 and 10-6 depending on the season. You will work remotely one (1) to two (2) of the five days. The goal, to lay down the framework for a rejuvenated marketing plan and to meet with management from time to time to review. After six (6) months of continual full-time employment, you will earn one (1) week or five (5) days of paid vacation which can be taken over the summer or fall months. Additionally, after continuous full-time employment of six (6) months you will have an additional five (5) paid days to use. A review of your compensation will take place during the month of December 2024. After ninety (90) days of continual employment Chelsea will pay fifty (50%) percent of our health insurance plan.

Qualifications

  • Strong design skills and an eye for aesthetics.
  • Interest in plants, horticulture, and retail garden center nursery operations.
  • Proficiency with Shopify website software.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Instagram Shop, Meta Business Suite, Shopify, Mailchimp, and Google Suite.
